UNITED NATIONS, March 14 (UPI) — Sierra Leone has progressed since the end of its civil war but the international community needs to help transition efforts, a U.N. official said.

More than 50,000 people were killed in a civil war that raged for more than a decade. Mayoral, local council, parliamentary and presidential elections in November were the second since peacekeepers from the U.N. Mission in Sierra Leone left the country in 2005.
