The review of Sierra Leone’s constitution, which many consider outdated, was officially launched with the inauguration by President Ernest Bai Koroma of an 80-member committee charged with spearheading the process.
Justice Edmond Cowan, former Speaker of Parliament and current Ombudsman, is heading the committee which has 24 months to come up with a draft constitution that will be put to a referendum.
“By launching this Constitutional Review Committee, we are obeying this great constitutional mandate to renew the constitution,” President Koroma told a packed ceremony in Freetown.
