At Visit Sierra Leone (VSL TRAVEL), our mission has always been clear:
to help the world see Sierra Leone the way we do — full of beauty, culture, and unforgettable experiences.
In March 2026, Visit Sierra Leone (VSL TRAVEL) had the privilege of hosting an international Familiarisation (FAM) Trip in partnership with The Adventure Connection, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, and a number of valued hospitality partners.
We welcomed a group of carefully selected tour operators to experience Sierra Leone first-hand. It was an opportunity to open our doors — and allow Sierra Leone to speak for itself.
Throughout the journey, we curated experiences that reflect the true diversity of the destination.
From the historical depth of Bunce Island to the lush biodiversity of Tiwai Island, from the energy of local communities to the tranquillity of our beaches — every moment was designed to go beyond the surface. The aim was not just to show Sierra Leone, but to allow our guests to connect with it.
Because ultimately, connection is what turns a destination into a recommendation.
“Freetown itself was as colourful and lively as a carnival, and meeting the enthusiastic and joy-giving people of Rainbow Town was a real highlight for me. Culturally, I’ve never been anywhere so fascinating. Tribal traditions performed by incredible dancers and talented musicians felt uncontrived and left you wanting to know more about tradition and secret societies.”
— Rafe, Pioneer Expeditions
From Visitors to Ambassadors
A defining moment of the trip came during the final debrief session in Freetown, where our guests met with key stakeholders from the tourism sector, including representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourist Board.
The feedback was honest, insightful, and encouraging.
But one message stood out above all:
they arrived as visitors, but they are leaving as ambassadors.
That is the true success of any FAM trip.
As a destination management company, we understand that destinations are not built on marketing alone — they are built on trust.
Building a Destination, Together
We were particularly encouraged by the strong engagement from both the public and private sectors.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, and our valued hospitality partners, including Tariq’s Resort, Country Lodge, The Place, Wusum Hotel, Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel, and Bafa Resort.
Partnerships like these are essential as we continue to develop Sierra Leone’s tourism sector in a meaningful and sustainable way.
What Comes Next
The real impact of a FAM trip begins after it ends.
Our guests leave with more than memories — they leave with stories, insights, and a genuine connection to Sierra Leone. These are the voices that will shape itineraries, influence travel decisions, and introduce Sierra Leone to new markets.
We are already seeing encouraging signs, with operators exploring new programmes and looking ahead to scheduled departures from late 2026 into 2027.
