It is said that in the late 1800’s, the widowed ‘Queen Nyarroh’ of Barri, fell in love with the Chief of Koya, who lived on the opposite side of the Moa river, behind Tiwai Island. As a gift of love, Queen Nyarroh gave half of Tiwai to the Koya Chief, so the Chiefdoms would share ownership.

Tiwai Island is particularly interesting to people who have an interest in wildlife and the bi-diversity of the island. It is a popular spot for tourists and researchers alike. The accommodation is tents set on raised platforms, and while basic, the tranquility more than makes up for it. You can go on forest walks, boat trips down the river or visit other neighbouring islands.
