On instructions of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister on Tuesday, 29th January 2013 announced Sierra Leone will be contributing a whopping sum of US$1 Million to expedite the deployment of African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA). Dr. Samura Kamara’s announcement was at a Donors Conference on Mali which was held at the African Union Commission’s new Conference Centre in Addis Ababa.
It can be recalled that when Sierra Leone suffered its civil war, other countries contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to help resolve the Sierra Leone conflict. It is against this backdrop that a good number of Western Diplomats who attended the conference maintained that the US$1Million pledge made by President Koroma was an indication that
Sierra Leone is not only very committed to the resolution of regional and continental conflicts but the move was a clear signal that Sierra Leone under the leadership of President Koroma was moving from strength to strength in consolidating its peace.
