UNITED NATIONS, March 26 (Xinhua) — The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution to renew the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL) for another year.

“The mandate of UNIPSIL shall be extended until 31 March 2014,” said the resolution.

The 15-country council also applauded the significant progress made toward achieving peace and stability and in laying the ground for Sierra Leone’s long-term development.

The Security Council established UNIPSIL in 2008 to support the African nation’s transition to a peaceful and stable state.

In November of last year, Sierra Leone organized its first free general elections.
