DALLAS – Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier and current UNICEF advocate for children’s rights, started his lecture at Misericordia University by talking about storytelling.

As a child in Sierra Leone, Beah listened to stories around the campfire. He told the audience he knew he had to pay close attention, because adults would quiz him later about their content. He memorized speeches from Shakespeare, although he didn’t learn until later what they meant. He listened to American hip-hop music.
