From the moment we stepped off the boat we felt welcome at The Banana Island Guesthouse. We were met by Osman, who was to look after us for the evening. After taking our lunch orders we were taken to our rooms. We had been camping for 4 days so the rooms were absolute luxury as we enjoyed the showers and clean sheets.

The Guesthouse is run mainly by solar which was inconsistent but other than that the rooms were some of the best we have experienced in Sierra Leone.
The setting is stunning and it felt very much like we had our own private beach. After a long lunch we spent much of the afternoon relaxing on the beach or in the various hammocks dotted around the area. We then headed off on a walking tour of the island, to discover its rich history. We came across old colonial lampposts and even a post-box. The island had a very gentle feel and the people were very welcoming. The bird watchers among us were kept constantly entertained seeing all kinds of different species hiding in the enormous trees that tower over the island. The next morning we were lucky enough to watch monkeys as they swung from the branches in search of breakfast. In the evening we enjoyed Lobster, washed down with a cold bottle of white wine before we retired to our delightful rooms.
The Banana Island Guesthouse is not the cheapest option on the island, but it certainly great value for money. It is the staff that often make the difference and in Osman, the Guesthouse will continue to delight. The all round experience is unrivalled and we all felt thoroughly relaxed as we stepped on to our boat back to mainland.
