Like many children in Sierra Leone, 13-year-old Kadiatu Kamara lost both her parents in the country’s decade-long civil war.

But she is one of the lucky ones. Not only has she been given the chance of an ­education, she no longer has to fear the daily threat of rape – because her school is one of the few to have separate boys’ and girls’ toilets.
