Aw yu du?
In the last issue, I mentioned a couple of interesting developments in the tourism sector – the new Banana Island resort is one such development. It’s basic but very charming. Built with local materials it offers a glimpse of how we can successfully harness the beauty of our environment instead of shooting for five star western style designs on a third world budget. I’d love to just lie on the beach next to the chalet surrounded by solar lamps and the sound of the ocean, if even for one night - away from the organised chaos that sometimes engulfs Freetown.
The island is easily accessible and with its friendly inhabitants, history, lobsters and this new resort – you might stay longer than anticipated. Local guides are also on hand to offer a guided tour of the island. What’s more, this resort is a community driven project and the resort will be handed back to the community in a couple of years. Good job. Next month, I'll be talking about another resort.

Announcing: Sierra Leone Education Portal
The Sierra Leone Education Portal is envisioned as an 'Open Learning Community' - a virtual space for those interested in the development of Sierra Leone's education system to share ideas, teach, and learn. It is our collective efforts that will develop the portal...as the old saying goes "it takes a village." See the many ways that you can get involved in the portal's development.
The vision for the Education Portal is that it would become a space where education professionals in Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leonean diaspora can engage on critical issues facing the sector.

From Child Soldier to Bestselling Author
How's this for an inspirational story? In "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" Ishmael Beah gives an insight into the dark world of Child Soldiers. He is a former boy soldier in the Sierra Leone war. I'm not going to attempt to review this book as it's on my 'to read' list - so you'll have to make do with the write up from the New York Times for now. Our VSL book club seems very thrilled about this release, so safe to say this is a must read.

Nataša's Sierra Leone Adventure - Part 9 - Stay Away from Big Fish!
.....there is a better place for foreigners, trust me, she said. I like to forget being a foreigner as much as I can, when I travel, as difficult as it can sometimes be, being white, coming from Europe being seen as someone who has money, a lot of opportunities in life they don't have, everything better, they think. But it's not always all better what we have in our western lives, I sometimes try to explain, although it's hard to deny, how much more privileged we are in many ways. So they figured, I was worthy of something better than the local guesthouse. Or did they think, I also had more money to pay for the luxury. I was to find that out... Read the blog
