Visit Sierra Leone Charles the drummer

Aw yu du?

Christmas is upon us and I'm sure everyone is counting down to the holidays, we can all do with a bit of rest after another hectic year right? For those who will be heading of to Sierra Leone, I hope you enjoy your break. I suspect there may not be a newsletter in December, so if you do not hear from me, Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2007.

Even Prince Charles has checked out Sierra Leone, what are you waiting for?

The Prince has just completed his first ever trip to Sierra Leone where he received a warm welcome and entertainment from some of Sierra Leone's top performers. These are the little signals which are sent out to reinforce Sierra Leone's peace and stability so I guess it's all good. Apparently he had a go at the drums and quite enjoyed it. The Prince also visited the Prince of Wales School.

On the domestic front

There is some good news from the Health Ministry in Sierra Leone. The ministry along with some NGOs have embarked on a massive programme to vaccinate all under-fives against measles and to provide them with a mosquito net to prevent malaria. Nearly one million bednets, sprayed with insecticide, have been handed out by the ministry of health and the Sierra Leone Red Cross. Great stuff.

Trade Promotion Movies

Following comments from the movie clip last month, I've got another couple to share. They are part of a series of Promotion Videos for Sierra Leone commissioned by DFID. For the sake of bandwidth expenses I'll feature only one this month.

Sierra Leone to get first dedicated Tourist Guide Book

James Knight and Katrina Manson have just arrived in Sierra Leone after driving all the way from the UK. What an adventure. They will be in Sierra Leone for the next few months writing a travel guide on Sierra Leone for Bradt Travel Guides. Their latest work is one done for Burkina faso. They have promised to keep us updated through the VSL blog and have contributed their first article "The most beautiful place in the world".

Don't miss the Refugee All Stars

Refugee All Stars Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars have been on a very successful tour of North America. Their next stop is Uncasville, 29th November 2006 where they will be playing with Aerosmith. They will be playing in London on 4th December. This is definitely worth seeing. The only downpoint is that there have been very few Sierra Leoneans turning up to their shows. I saw them in London last year and the documentary and music CD is excellent piece of work.
