Visit Sierra Leone

Ow di bodi?

I've been a naughty boy so I've got a couple of apologies I should get out of the way. First off, some of you may have received last month's newsletter twice. I meant to send it to one subscriber who requested a copy of it but... (doh!)

Secondly, sorry for the slightly late arrival of your monthly digest, this was due to a few reasons I will not bore you with. So... am I forgiven?

Following on from last month's newsletter, I was informed by some subscribers that Kenya Airways recently stopped their flights via Lagos. They currently fly via Accra back to Nairobi. Paramount Airlines have also resumed flights to Conakry. Thanks for that folks, its nice to know the newsletter is read! :)

How easy is it to Visit Sierra Leone?

After last month's newsletter I received an email regarding an individual that needed to travel to Sierra Leone in a real hurry but with no diplomatic representation in Canada, this meant heading first to Washington or London. It can be a real pain. Read this blog by Nataša, our VSL forumite from Slovenia to get an idea of what can sometimes be involved.

The issue of visas being issued on arrival at Lungi is one which I believe is currently being looked at by parliament. Actually, they've been looking at it for a while and I'm not certain of the current status but will keep you updated on progress. If we are serious about attracting tourists and investors then this issue may be worth some serious consideration. See our diplomatic missions abroad page to find out where you can obtain your visa. For groups of five or more you may be able to get some assistance from the National Tourist Board in the form of landing permits.

Christmas Hideaway...

Have you considered staying in a hotel during the Christmas holidays? This is becoming increasingly popular amongst Sierra Leonean folks looking to go back home for a well-deserved break. According to a few clients who've made bookings through VSL, the main reasons for staying in hotels include "peace and quiet", closeness to the beaches, regular power and water supply.

The main reason for not staying in hotels is the cost. If you are planning to visit with your family or as a group, you may be able to get better rates with some of the best hotels such as Hotel Kimbima and Hotel Bintumani. Get in touch with us to find out more.

VSL will be providing more information on budget to medium price range accommodations in the coming months so stay tuned.

Volunteering Opportunities in Sierra Leone

Seeing as we've been having folks asking about volunteering opportunities, our web directory has been updated with NGOs that are operating in Sierra Leone (domestic and international), I'm sure they would be happy to hear from potential volunteers

Sierra Leone on CNBC Africa Report

This is a link to a 20 minute documentary on Sierra Leone which was broadcast on CNBC. This is a huge file. The link will open up windows media player, but it will need to download at least half of the programme before it starts to play, so if you do not have broadband you may be waiting a while.

That's it for this month. Until next time, take good care of yourself and each other.
