I normally use Western Union but this service is way too expensive.

Does anyone use MoneyGram, they seem to charge a lower fee but do they have as many outlets as Western Union. I know there is another option Fadugu but they don't have collection in the lumley area i don't think

I use Moneygram. They have lots of agents in Freetown, sure there will be some in Lumley. Search their website and it will give you a list of agents.

What is the main disadvantage of using the banking system?

I have never looked into using the normal banking system.

Is it still transferred within minutes or does it take days?

The banking system can take several days. You also pay a fee both ends, so it is not economic for small amounts (less than £1000 for example). However, you should get a much better exchange rate, so it is better for large amounts.

I use Kanson Services, they specialize in sending money to Salone and are probably the cheapest, for instance they charge £1.50 to send up to £50 and £3.00 up to £100 etc, I would definitely recommend them. Very friendly and helpful, they will also transfer money to a Sierra Leone bank account at no extra cost, just ask.

I tell you another option I discovered, which is kind of dependent on the bank.. and your relationship with it.

If both accounts are in your name, you can write a cheque to yourself. It may also be possible for you to go to the bank with your current balance/statement (the account you're transferring from) and they *might* credit your account instantly.

Bayba send money to Sierra leone and Gambia. Been using them for years and they are brilliant. You register with them, Put money into their Barclays account either cash or online then ring them say where and who is picking up the money and its done. Money is usually available within 2 hours
