President Koroma says “a culture of rights is taking hold in Sierra Leone” as he adresses the Human PDF Print E-mail

We are here today to map out strategies to implement our Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report, and I feel very much at home. As head of a government of implementation, I feel very much at home in meetings where we talk about how to further the implementation of our commitments.

As President I feel very much at home in the human rights community, and I am very proud of my human rights record. We have as a nation done better than most other countries that came out of war to defend, protect, and promote human rights. We have moved away from the era of extra judicial killings and torture of innocent people; we have moved away from the times when journalists were beaten by government officials in government offices; we are moving away from the image of Sierra Leone as a place of grave human rights abuses. We have made a commitment as a nation, never again shall we allow the violent and violators amongst us to get the upper hand. The UPR provided a great opportunity for evidence-based self-reflection and assessment of our human rights situation
