Sierra Leone/Tanzania: Four ARS Stars Off to Man-U Clinic in Tanzania Today PDF Print E-mail

Freetown — Four Airtel Rising Stars ARS youngsters are to leave Freetown today for the Man-U Soccer Clinic in Tanzania. The four will be accompanied by renowned sports journalist Muctaru Wurie and a chaperon. They will leave onboard the Kenyan Airways flight bound for Nairobi via Ghana before proceeding to Tanzania where the clinic would be held. In Tanzania, the youngsters are expected to meet their contemporaries from other countries where Airtel operates as well as showcase their football skills with the hope of being picked up by talent scouts who will attend the clinic specifically for that purpose. A similar clinic will take place in Gabon specifically tailored for the French speaking African countries with Airtel operations, another in Cape Town, South Africa.

Sierra Leone’s Justice Fofanah Participates In New York Human Rights Seminar PDF Print E-mail

Washington, D.C.: Monday 24th October, 2011: The inaugural lecture for this year’s Human Rights Seminar, held at The City University of New York, was presented by Sierra Leone’s High Court Judge, Justice Abdulai Sheikh Fofanah.

The theme of the seminar was, “Assessing Compliance: The Role of Human Rights Monitoring Mechanisms”.

The Seminar aims at studying how monitoring mechanisms are utilized to assess compliance with international human rights norms and standards.

Honorary Consul General visits Sierra Leonean Community in Dallas Fort Worth, Texas PDF Print E-mail

Dallas, Texas, USA: October 23rd.  It is argued that the establishment of the consular service in Texas is a necessary part of the Sierra Leone policy of trade expansion that President Ernest Bai Koroma focused on as part of his economic development plans. FREETOWN — Sierra Leone's President Ernest Koroma on Monday welcomed Princess Anne of the United Kingdom, who is on a three-day visit to the west African nation with her husband.

At a ceremony at State House, Koroma recalled "the close link between Britain and Sierra Leone", adding the former colonial power had remained a loyal development partner.

Hollywood actress Eva Mendes has visited rape victims in Sierra Leone as part of a new documentary.

The Hitch star jetted out to the African country earlier this month (Oct11) to spend time with women who have suffered sexual abuse and her trip was filmed for the upcoming Half the Sky, which will be narrated by George Clooney.

(CNN) -- Sierra Leone's economy was tarnished by a decade-long civil war, but the resource-rich African nation is now ready to bounce back, according to the country's president.

Ernest Bai Koroma said that a series of key financial reforms can help the west African country transform in the coming decades.

"I've challenged Sierra Leoneans -- and I'm sure they've accepted the challenge -- that in the next 50 years, we are not only going to transform ourselves from a low-income country, but we will get ourselves to the level of middle-income country," he says.

Visit to Sierra Leone of Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal PDF Print E-mail

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, accompanied by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, will visit Freetown for the first time from 23-26 October to take part in the ongoing celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of Sierra Leone’s independence. This will also mark almost 50 years to the month since Her Majesty the Queen’s visit in 1961.

The 'Journey' from Sierra Leone to Framingham PDF Print E-mail

Fatmata Conteh's journey began 56 years ago in the village of Mabonto, Sierra Leone, and has included her older children being adopted by a Peace Corps volunteer from Natick, and the murder of her husband during the 10-year civil war in their West African homeland.

It includes the day in 1999, when rebels caught up to her family as they made their way to Makeni.

"We saw them cutting off people's hands. One of my daughters was crying. I told her not to cry."

Polo Resources’ Nimini kicks of drill programme at Sierra Leone gold projects PDF Print E-mail

Polo Resources (LON:POL, TSE:POL) told investors that its 51 per cent owned associate Nimini Holdings has kicked off a 5,000 metre exploration drill programme at the Komahun high grade gold project in Sierra Leone.

The 5,000 metre drill programme includes both in-fill and extension drilling, and it is focusing on the Komahun main zone. Nimini is also planning to drill the Sendekor prospect, a potential iron target with a four kilometre strike area.
