Does President Koroma deserve accolades in the fight against corruption? Print E-mail

Recent political developments unfolding in the fight against corruption in Sierra Leone seem quite bizarre yet unique and interesting. This is as a result of the government’s pharisaical, inconsistent, parochial and selective/double standard posture in that direction. Sometime last month, I reacted rather angrily to a press statement from President Koroma’s press secretary titled “President Koroma names and shames corrupt government institutions”.  I lambasted the president’s press secretary for a worthless demagogic propaganda in support of the government’s efforts in the fight against corruption, and the president for his lip service, lack of political will, and doing too little all too late to tackle the hydra headed monster and canker worm of corruption.

A NEW ERA HAS ARRIVED IN SA. LEONE ! ! Print E-mail
There is a Temne saying that one does not make noise while setting a trap or snare to catch a prey.  President Ernest Bai Koroma did not heed that advice.  Since he came to office over two years ago, he has been warning his cabinet and the entire country against corruption.  Last month, he even called his top security officers and alerted them to some of the corrupt practices that thwart Sierra Leone’s progress.  While they all listened and said “yes sir” at the end, many in that audience did not heed the warning.  They figured that life would continue as usual.  Afterwards this is Sierra Leone where so many leaders have made lofty promises in the past only to break those promises with impunity.  But as US President Barak Obama would put it, “not this time!”

Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has been hired to manage the recently constructed Bumbuna Hydroelectric Project (BHP) in Sierra Leone by the west African country’s National Power Authority (NPA). The project was undertaken by Italian-based firm, Salini Costruttori.

A tender launched by NPA, in July 2009, to attract foreign power companies to operate and maintain installations in accordance with internationally recognised standards was won by EEPCo, which sees itself working abroad for the first time in its half-century-plus-experience in the management of hydroelectric power dams in Ethiopia.

Deposit claim boosts African Minerals’ hopes Print E-mail

African Minerals, the Aim-quoted mining company, said it was sitting on the largest industry certified resource of magnetite iron ore in the world, after revising upward the size of a deposit in Sierra Leone to an estimated 10.5bn tonnes.

The results of drilling at the Tonkolili project comply with the Joint Ore Reserve Committee, or JORC, the industry standard for verification of mineral deposits, and were signed off by the well-regarded SRK Consultancy.

But some mining analysts said investors should be cautious and questioned the record of Frank Timis, executive chairman and major shareholder of African Minerals, one of the largest mining companies on Aim by market capitalisation.

Hospitals to display price list Print E-mail

The recommendations for reform towards a better health care delivery system in Sierra Leone done by the Anti Corruption Commission reveals that both Government Hospitals and Health Centers should both display price list and account for funds collected.
Rashid Turay attached to the Systems and Process Review of the ACC, said in an interview that after they did a systems review of all Government hospitals in the country, they recommended that hospitals should display a price list of all medical charges. He said that will enable people to know the services or drugs they pay for.
What the review observed in the area of revenue collection was that there exists a confused landscape for revenue collection among the health delivery institutions. A unified or centralized system for the purpose of revenue collection was absent.

The IMC Must Not Let the FCC Get Away With This Political GimmickThe Freetown City Council (FCC) is Print E-mail

The Freetown City Council (FCC) is reported to have applied for a license to the Independent Media Commission (IMC) to own and operate a radio station in the Western Area for which reason is obvious.

Even though its planners are hiding under the cloak of using the radio to propagate and disseminate what they claim to be Council's activities to its constituents, the obvious rationale behind this whole gimmick is to provide avenue for the APC party to propagate its political messages to residents of Freetown in readiness for the upcoming 2012 general elections.
