Mamba Point

In spite of some tough competition Mamba Point gets my choice for the best food in Freetown. Other restaurants have dishes that surpass it, and it's not without it's faults, but the kitchen is professional; despite the huge menu it consistently turns out quality food, it doesn't grind to a halt when it's busy and the last dish out of the door in a day is as good as the first - that takes planning and effort, and it shows.

Mamba point is a hotel and guest house which has two restaurants, the main bar/bistro and the excellent Barracuda bar. The main restaurant is a curiously small hexagonal affair with an absence of charm and a perma-tv above the bar (thankfully sound-less), when it's full there is a larger function room/ dining area on the other side of the hotel, which is ok, but your best bet is to dine in the garden where they set about half a dozen tables. Alternatively walk through the main bar and into the barracuda Bar sushi restaurant; which served me the best sushi I have had outside of Japan.

Neither restaurant is cheap, but there are some good value items, the large pizzas are certainly enough for even the largest of appetites and most people share, one large and a salad apparently feeds 3 but I've never quite been persuaded!

It's quite easy to get a taxi to (bottom mango is one-way from Congo-cross), but the local youths that hang out outside discourage many people from walking in, and 99% of the clients drive. The car park gets quite full, but the attendants work hard to get everyone in; and have recently started giving numbers to car's that block others so they can track down the owners more discretely... good development lads.

So it's not got the character of other restaurants and the service is only sometimes good but for consistently good food it's the best.

5* because : Consistently good food.

(footnote: last week, after two and a half years of eating there I had my first poor meal where the fish was undercooked.. so Mamba Point is not perfect but I still rate it highly. )
