Bamboo Hut

The Bamboo Hut is somehow less than the sum of its parts. It has everything it needs to be a top-flight restaurant; a good central location, an interesting building, it’s got good parking, the dining room is smart enough, and the food’s ok. Somehow though it always feels empty. Don’t mistake me, it is worth a visit, the local dishes are well done and it’s a good place to ‘try’ the local plassas or beans if you can’t face the smaller local eateries.
They do vegetarian options (which is rare) and have some safe international options for the less-adventurous. We went with a big group and all but one of us had a great meal, but they forgot one completely; that’s Bamboo Hut, doing so much right but it’s not yet great.

(4* because it's not 5)

Think Again

What a relief it is to come to the Bamboo Hut after other better known restaurants on the beach, and find the dishes you would have cooked at home if you'd had the time to hunt for the ingredients and prepare them: cow foot soup, local pepper chicken, and so on. A restaurant we'd been going to on the beach with a rigid Western menu has long since stopped serving anything to munch on while you're waiting for your food, but Bamboo Hut gives you sweet potato chips. Everything seems designed to make maximum use of what is available locally, and we appreciate that. If the waitress is late to work, or the napkins aren't yet folded, who cares? The food's great and so are the staff!

A Great Sierra Leonean Restaurant, especially for VEGGIES!

I lived in Sierra Leone for 2 1/2 years and have tried all the (few)restaurants there, and Bamboo hut is my favourite! Contrarily to a lot of restaurants it is not 'expat' and it actually serves sierra leonean food! As a vegetarian it was my only chance to taste sierra leonean food (and YUMMY!!!)!

The restaurand is indeed slow sometimes, but well, all the food is prepared fresh! In addition, bamboo hut has great snacks to help you wait: cassava and plantain chips, and of course, you need a star beer too....

The staff is really nice and sweet, and the restaurant itself is very cosy (especially the table outside/in the little garden). THe prices are reasonable (around 10 USD for a dish) and really the food is great (especially the foofoo!).

It is definitely a MUST DO for me :)

Bamboo Hut - Staff

During our three week stay in Freetown the Bamboo Hut was the friendliest, coolest place we found to enjoy both local and western food. The beer is as claimed the coldest in town (unless you know different!)

The manager, Wilmelia and her staff kept our active three year old son amused and under control, 'Uncle' Desmond had a lot to put up with.

We thoroughly recommend a visit to this establishment.
