Wusum Hotel is the Jewel of Makeni. It is a well done hotel along Teko Road in Makeni and is the effort of a Makeni born business man. Each room is air-conditioned with satellite TV and a fridge. The hotel has a gorgeous pool which is beautiful at night and sits next to the bar area. Its conference centre and wine bar makes this hotel the ideal choice whether you are visiting for business or leisure.

Not perfect but pretty good..

I first went to Wusum before it was finished. Though in truth, it does seem like they're always building something - they expect to have their new games room and gym (stocked with brand new cardiovascular equipment) open in the next couple of months or so. When i blogged about that first visit a lot of people where enthusiastic about such a project in Makeni. Others were apprehensive about the ability to recover the investment from such an undertaking in Makeni which let's face it - didn't have a vibrant economy at the time. Fast forward three years and it would seem that Mr Kanu was indeed a visionary and saw an opportunity before everyone else. Makeni is buzzing with activity and various companies are operating not far from the town, Addax and African Minerals to name a couple. The road within the town (and to the hotel)has been significantly improved too.

They (the hotel) did have a blip, a time when feedback from guests wasn't flattering but I think they have done well to address some of the issues raised by guests. The hotel is looking good and the staff are better. They still do not provide power through out, their generator comes on at 5pm and their air-conditioning at 7pm. According to the management their fuel costs still top Le75m a month, so i guess it's responsible management to try and limit the cost even though some guests will find it an inconvenience. The pool area is particular buzzing (though it was the weekend) and even though I didn't check out the club, I'm sure it was full of activity from locals and expats.

They have wireless internet for a one-time cost of $10 and the speed - when i did connect - was pretty impressive. Their restaurant is ok but not cheap. Apparently, they have to source products like fish from far off. The DSTV in the room appeared not to work but that didn't bother me and I didn't report it. When I wasn't aware the air-conditioning came on at 7pm I reported it as broken and they did send someone round immediately. Obviously, there was nothing wrong with it.

All in all, I am still very proud of Wusum Hotel. I think they have done a lot of work to maintain and improve the hotel and give them credit for that. I also think they have listened to customer feedback which is commendable. I wouldn't hesitate to send any of our clients to this hotel.

Don't expect too much for too much money

I've stayed in this hotel on 25th of december 2010.
During daytime there was NO electricity. Staff is ignorant and foolish.
Bar people hang around, they never have any change. They keep change as a tip. They are also very interested in television and not in costumerservice.
The day before I've stayed in MJ Motel for 30% of Wusum hotel price. At that moment there was 24H electricity and also good costumercare. It's possible in Salone, but surely not in Wusum!!!

Air con and a pool - perfect

If you are going to Makeni, then the Wusum is the place to stay. You can easily spend hours by the pool with the bar, and retire to your air con room for the evening, before a night out in one of the clubs in town - not something you can say of too many of the accomodation choices in the provinces. We even managed to get a decent bottle of wine in the bar.

Africal is Africa

Having the thought that Africa is Africa made me to value and highly credited Wusum hotel.Put it in context that we are not in a first world country where services and government's financial benefits are on your backside and poverty away from your backside. This is a so-called third world country in the first place, what ever service or expectation any one wished will not be obtain from this place otherwise stay in Babylon for the rest your life because you have been brain-washed by western expectations and unsatisfactory attitudes mentality. stay in the western world but for me African hotel like Wusum are a stepping stone to development.I have been in Europe for nearly 20 years but you will never take away the respect i got for Africa and my oriental culture.I'm a Sierra Leone limba by tribe,so know who i am.
