The location is what this hotel is all about - having previously stayed at Hotel Barmoi, the Family Kingdom was like a breath of fresh air. It allows you to walk across the road to the beach, down to the many beach restaurants, and round the corner after a night out at The Office. We had a room in the new block and it was particulary spacious with good air con. The only slight downside is that there are often big parties in the complex, so very loud music in the evening, so if you are looking for a rest after a day on the beach, before heading out, you are best to bring some ear plugs. But I would recommend this place for a good clean central place to stay - the staff are very friendly, and there is free laundry every day

We as a family of 2 adults and a four year old little girl, went to freetown in april 2010 and stayed at this resort. It is absolutely perfect for the seaside as one of the many beautiful beaches is just opposite the resort. Cross the road infront of the resort and the beach is there in your face. The breakfast was good, as we had a choices of different fruits, eggs pancakes etc and the ladies who did the breakfast service, did a fantastic job. Our 4 year old daughter had a great time joining them in clearing up and they treated her just like a little sister, especially one of the ladies called F.A. (short for Fatima). The apartments and rooms were massive,so make sure that you ask for one of these, we were allocated the Empire Building, Empire 6 and this was more than we needed, but suited us well as our daughter could run around and play when we were in doors. One thing that was a downfall were the restaurants, the food and drinks was very expensive and not that impressive at all considering that sierra leonean food is delicious and in the same level as carribean food. One thing i did find out was that the restaurants don't belong to the resort and the restaurant buildings are rented out and are run by different people. So it would be wrong for me to give the resort a poor rating based on no fault of ther own.
Now to the management: The Family Kingdon Resort is owned and managed by 2 Lebanese brothers (Mr Jawads) These guys are absolutely brilliant and have lived in freetown for ever. Whilst you are there, you can never want for anything, just go and speak to them if you have any issues and see it get resolve before you can even blink. As far as i am concerned these guys should manage all the hotels in freetown. I took my wife who is caucasian and our mixed race daughter to freetown for the first time and these guys made them both feel very welcoming and part of the family. It was our first time at the Kingdom and we would definately stay there again. One of the big mistakes that people make when they go to africa, is they expect european or american hotel standards of service, Please don't make this mistake as some parts of africa like Sierra Leone is up and coming again after past events. Just remember this,the president and the people are working hard to get to the high standards the country once was, give them a chance please. Enjoy your trip to S.L and see if you don't fall in love with the country and it's people and just want stay forever.

I liked the water cooker in the room
the food in the two restaurants is very poor
the internet is very slow and sometimes not functioning - this compared to other hotels where I stayed.
perhaps the young ladies at the breakfast table could smile a bit more.

Only used the restaurant. The food is mediocre at best. Try Crown bakery, Bliss patisserie or the cafe at the Britsh council for good food. The latter two are particularly good.
